Beads & Boos: Success at schools in Alexandria and Avoyelles To Avoyelles Public Charter School, which is 生活celebrating its Beads 10th anniversary this year. Founders, students and families heap praise upon principal Julie Durand for her leadership and commitment to make the school a success. That success is built on the careful screening of applicants (slackers need not apply), discipline and required parental involvement. The latter is something non-charter schools hope for, but cannot require.

To outdated rules and regulations that impede the education process in Louisiana's public schools. Charter schools are a good idea, precipitated primarily by the disconnect between parents, children and their neighborhood schools. Well-run charter schools succeed because they are authorized to conduct business differently, as stated in their charters. To succeed, all public schools -- charter and otherwise -- need to be able to operate Beads that way.

To Que'in on the Red, held Friday and Saturday in downtown Alexandria. It was a tasty, fun time, and there's nothing wrong with having a little rain with your ribs.

BEADS: To Louisiana College's Lady Wildcats softball team, ranked No. 1 last week in the NCAA Division 3 poll. This is the third consecutive season the team has been ranked at the top at some point in the season. Go 'Cats.

To the England Authority, which continues to work on its Neighborhood Noise Mitigation Program to lessen the noise around Alexandria International Airport. The program has several components, including buying nearby properties outright, subsidizing relocation costs, doing acoustical work on homes and property, and buying aerial navigation, or avigation, rights from homeowners.
